The weekend that was
I have to admit, this weekend was a bunch of fun (and, of course, involved minor events that were worth a giggle).
It started off with an idea.
An idea for a BBQ.
An idea for a BBQ with friends.
A idea for a BBQ with friends of such proportions that one would have difficulties fitting said BBQ on a four-burner BBQ.
Also, the BBQ could not consist of just any meat - it had to be meat from a decent butcher (which usually means the little neighbourhood ones).
And salad - there had to be salad.
<Continue plans of grandeur ad nauseum>
Ahem.
I proceeded to head to our little neighbourhood butcher and picked up a couple of different things, only to be greeted with a wonderful query from V, which went something along the lines of, “you do realise there’s only going to be four of us, right?” and “did they have anything left once you were done?”. Such a spectacular way of summing things up.
And yes, I take my BBQ’s kinda seriously
Long story short, the night and, most importantly, the BBQ went very well, in spite of running out of gas a few minutes before the last things were cooked… again. All this was after taking every possible precaution and scientifically ensuring there was enough gas by the highly accurate “lift, shake and guesstimate” method. Oh, and my half-a-cow butcher raid covered that night and lunch the next day - I only slightly overcatered
To celebrate a successful BBQ, Adrian requested some assistance in confusing the neighbours by riding around the ‘hood multiple times. Combine two idiots with a competitive streak, a reasonable ego and two wheels each, and you get two tired idiots cursing each other for the rest of the night for pushing the other to keep up. At least he pulled up more a little more sore than I did the next day
More amusingly, I’m pretty sure Adrian’s method of freeing up his suspension was not recommended by the manufacturer.
On Saturday, Graz held one of his famous pizza nights - everyone rocks up, finds a bunch of raw materials and proceeds to make a mess which usually results in pizzas from pretty close to scratch (fortunately, our gracious host makes the dough in advance in order to speed up the pizza making efforts and cut down on the mess - I don’t blame him for keeping most of the flour away from us
).
We also watched a couple of movies. The first, Equilibrium was my choice. It’s a very different movie, which IMDb describes as:
In a fascist future where all forms of feeling are illegal, a man in charge of enforcing the law rises to overthrow the system.
Personally, I think of it more like an Orwellian future meets the Matrix. (note to self: pick up some Orwell or watch the movie of 1984 sometime soon).
The second was Porco Rosso. This is about an Italian pig that speaks Japanese, subtitled in English (with some French in there somewhere) flying a biplane. Sounds strange (and it was!), but the dialog was hilarious.
Unfortunately, I had to bail out half way through to pick V up from a rather big night, so I’m going to have to see about borrowing the DVD to watch a couple more episodes.
Sunday was spent attempting to get my head back into some study, and failing miserably. Instead, I caught up on some sysadmin work that was sorely needed on my home network.
Overall, it was fun and really good to catch up with the guys again - it was far too long between drinks.
And now? Back to the grind stone……

If only you knew how close I was to throwing it in (or up) halfway through that last sprint race up the hill…
As for freeing up the suspension, its in the handbook, under ‘Speed humps and Curbs, The uses of’.
Adrian
If memory serves me correctly, I wasn’t the one that said “c’mon, it’s only one more lap”.
Self inflicted, no sympathy
